Advent Wreath

An Advent wreath in the home in the weeks prior to Christmas is a simple and tangible way to remain focused through the Advent season.

The Advent wreath is filled with traditional symbolism. The green wreath reminds us of God’s endless mercy and the hope of renewal. The candles are for the four Sundays of Advent; the four themes of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love, and the four centuries of waiting between the prophet Malachi and the birth of Christ.

Advent Wreath Candles

During the Advent season one candle on the wreath is lit each week until all of the candles, including the fifth candle, are lit on Christmas Eve or Day. The progressive candle lighting symbolizes our waiting experience. As the candles are lit over the four-week period, the darkness of fear and hopelessness recedes.

Advent Wreath Prayers

WEEK 1: HOPE

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

We are easily distracted by the darkness that comes with unease and anxiety.

Source of light, shine in our lives and in your world with your renewing hope.

Amen.

Week 2: PEACE

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

We are easily distracted by the darkness of force and power and we often choose strife and turmoil.

Source of light, shine in our lives and in your world with your everlasting peace.

Amen.

Week 3: JOY

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

We are easily distracted by the darkness of isolation and fear.

Source of light, shine in our lives and in your world with your unending love.

Amen.

Week 4: LOVE

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

We are easily distracted by the darkness of doubt and despair.

Source of light, shine in our lives and in your world with your light and life giving joy.

Amen.
