rfkc 2014 – Returning

I return to RFKC as a counselor after a two year break away.

This year the time leading up to camp has been a “journey of returning home.”  All throughout, there has been the quiet, constant whisper at the edge of my awareness saying, “Welcome home, child.”     The four boys in my group are a huge blessing.  They have been the sweetest, kindest, most courteous group I have had the pleasure to serve.  There is one in particular – we will call him Thing C (my room is Dr Seuss themed) – who broke my heart and reminded me of why I, or any of us, do this.
Thing C is the smallest and youngest of my boys, but by far the “entertainer” of the group.  Sweet-natured.  Wicked sense of humor.  Stellar basketball player.  Eyelashes that girls can only dream of.  And thinks reversible shorts to be one of the greatest inventions EVER!
We were standing in Line for lunch when this look came over him.  It was that look of a heavy sorrow.  So, I pulled him out of line to talk to him, to see what was weighing on him so heavily.
“I just miss my parent.” – Thing C, with a sniffle.
“I’m sorry, bud.” – me.
“I’m in foster care.” – Thing C, tears welling up.
“Yeah…” me, “that stinks.”
“But!” Thing C starts, tears flowing, “I don’t get to see my REAL parents until I’m out of foster care.”

*GIANT PUNCH* straight to the heart.  What do you say to a statement like that?  Everything seems to fall incredibly short.  And there is nothing I can DO to “fix” it.
But this is why we do camp.  To shine a little light, a bit of joy, and a lot of love into these kids and their dark situations.  We do not come to fix anything (no matter how much I might want to).  We come just to be.  Be an embodiment of the Father’s love for a small group of the lost and broken.  To live out a small glimpse of the Kingdom at work.
Thing C was okay with the “consolation prize” of being my friend and making amazing memories this week.  So, I guess I’m home, fulfilling a piece of who I am meant to be.  And I am at peace doing so.
