rfkc 2014 – Wednesday

The longest day.  The longest hours.  Guards down.  Expectations challenged.  Children’s wounds made clear.

We just finished the most trying day.

It is humbling, that in the midst of this day, the family of staff and counselors chose to dig deep.  They chose to be present before the Almighty so that they could be present before the children at our side.

There were easier choices to make today.  To forget.  To check out.  To dream of the weekend.  Choices made to escape are drawn from shallow wells.  We see the bottom.  The water is stale.  When the sands shift, shallow wells are quickly overcome.

The family of RFKC drew from deeper wells today – wells with a bottom unseen.  Wells whose depth surprises even those that draw from it and whose waters are refreshing.  These are the wells given freely to us by our Father who loves us.

I am deeply proud of this family whose hearts are here, right now, in the grinding, sometimes heartbreaking, challenges of a day at Royal Family Kids Camp.  They inspire me.  And I am grateful to God for the glimpse of a Kingdom Come.

Henri Nouwen summarizes well:

“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”
