RFKC 2013 – Two Days Until Camp

We leave for camp in two days.  TWO DAYS!

Ever since I woke up this morning, I’ve had butterflies in my stomach.  Excited to gather together with the RFKC family we’ve created over the last few months.  Worried that I will forget to pack something. Anticipating the moment the kids will get off the bus and we’ll get to see their faces.  But mostly thinking about the number of unknowns.

See, this is only my second year at camp, and it is my first year serving on the leadership team.  At any point in the preparations this year, I’ve felt encouraged, frustrated, saddened, excited, nervous, and satisfied.  And there have been a lot of unknowns along the way.  Entering this week of camp, I can’t help but think about all the things I don’t know, all the things that will crop up that I wasn’t expecting, all the ways the kids and the adults will take me by surprise.

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to get to attend a close friend’s wedding in Yellowstone (and if you’ve never been….you need to.  Oh. My. Gosh.).  She got married at Artist’s Point, which overlooks a beautiful canyon with this incredible waterfall.  Another friend and I were walking to the ceremony site and as we rounded the corner, the sight rendered us speechless.  ”Wow,” she said after a moment. “I was not expecting that!”  At her statement, tears sprung to my eyes.  Now, let me just point out that most people who know me know that I am NOT a crier.  But this went straight to my heart and I thought, God, you’re crazy good.  Thank you showing up when I don’t expect it and showering me with love.

This past week, as I prepare for camp, I kept thinking back to that moment.  I can’t map out how the week will turn out, and if I could, I would probably ruin it.  Understanding that God is in control and that I’m only a part of something greater that he’s already doing eases my fears a little.  In fact, it makes me excited.  Remembering that moment in Yellowstone, I can’t wait to let God surprise me again and again.
