RFKC 2011: Sunday

Blog post from Bobby who serves on Royal Family Kids Camp Leadership Team.

A lot goes into pulling off this camp. That becomes really apparent on Sunday – we load up all the people and all the stuff and head off to camp. It is a lot of both, and it only represents the material portion. The relational capital and emotional investment surpass the material.

So is it worth it? I would say yes. In addition to getting ourselves ready this year, Becky and I helped our three new kids get ready as well. It lends a bit of a different perspective to be sure. When we moved our kids into our house a few weeks ago, we unpacked quite a bit of stuff they had saved from camp last year. They talk about it all the time. They flip when we get to see someone from camp last year. It is a big deal to them, and it is a big week in their year, and a big event in their life.

The kids that we serve, and our kids included, are starved for healthy attention. They desperately need to be encouraged and allowed to succeed. They need to hear about God’s love for them and learn that he is the ultimate father. And I think that RFKC does all that. The cost is high, but so are the returns.

So here we are. We’re ready for camp. We’ve moved into rooms and decorated and unpacked. Kids get here in the morning. We’re set-up to have so much fun, and hopefully we’re equipped to handle some difficult and gut-wrenching situations. And we have faith that God is over it all. I’m excited to see what the week holds, and the excitement is a little more palpable since my own kids are coming. It is with a renewed motivation and a renewed sense of humility that I serve this week. It is worth all that we put into it.
